We are pleased to announce that Julia Corcoran will become the new District Principal of St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sexsmith for Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools.

As District Principal of St. Mary’s School, Julia will be returning to a familiar community as she first began working with our District at St. Mary’s School in 2007. At the school, Julia worked on and assisted in planning the integration of Grades 10, 11, and 12 to turn St. Mary’s School into a High School. In 2012, Julia was appointed Assistant Principal of St. Mary’s, acting also as a teacher, classroom support teacher, high school counselor, and RAP/Work Experience Coordinator. Within the same year, Julia was the recipient of the Alberta Excellence in Education Award for Service above Self. Julia was appointed Assistant Principal for St. Joseph Catholic High School in 2013.

With having completed a Masters of Education: Multi-disciplinary Leadership, Julia has taken initiative in developing and leading students in various programs. At St. Joseph School, Julia helped develop the Grade 9 Families through building strong relationships with teachers, students, and parents. Her belief in student success has led her to also teach at HELA Summer School, High School First Responder Modules, and other courses with students who were short graduation requirements. Julia also has worked to enhance relationships within the school community through working as the Graduation Coordinator, Teacher Representative for St. Joseph Rugby, and contributing to the Travel Club, Yearbook, and Student Council.

In her time as high school counselor of St. Mary’s School, Julia started the Registered Apprentice Program and led the program to see students succeed and graduate through it. Julia was also a driving force behind creating the foods, fashion, and outdoor education programs. Additionally, she developed the St. Mary’s Science Fair competition, the Garden program, Student Council, and School Canteen, which are all successfully maintained to date. Other contributions Julia has made include coaching badminton and working with students through the Student Council and as team leader for DestiNation ImagiNation.

"Julia is an active and strong leader with a strong devotion to education,” stated Superintendent Karl Germann. “I very much look forward to working with her in her new position soon.”

Julia will begin her new position at St. Mary’s Catholic School in August 2017.
