Dual Credit Programs

What is Dual Credit Programming?
Dual Credit programming allows Grade 11, 12, and sometimes even Grade 10 students to earn both high school credits and credits that count towards a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, including a journeyman certificate.

Dual Credit helps students to:
• get a start on their post-secondary education while still in high school.
• complete high school while engaging in meaningful curriculum.
• transition to post-secondary studies or move into the world of work.
• potentially complete post-secondary with less financial debt.

Is Dual Credit Programming Right for me?
Students and parents need to consider if Dual Credit programming is the right fit. Post-secondary courses have increased expectations and timelines that students will need to manage alongside their regular high school programming.

Many of the courses incorporate online programming. Students are responsible for attending virtual or on-site sessions and meeting post-secondary timelines and expectations. In some cases, programs have pre-requisite or co-requisite courses students must have completed or be simultaneously enrolled in to be accepted into a dual-credit program; it is important to ensure you have the qualifications necessary to enroll. In addition, completing post-secondary courses/programs through Dual Credit may affect first-year post-secondary awards, bursaries, scholarships, athletic standing, and the limited transferability of some post-secondary programs. Therefore, it is highly encouraged that students always consult with their high school counselor and post-secondary institution advisor as they make decisions about their high school and post-secondary programming.

How does my child become involved?
Dual Credit Applications - Please be aware that applications for Dual Credit Courses are being sent to post-secondary institutions and so we must follow the application deadlines they set out.

What does this mean? Applications for Dual Credit programs vary according to the entrance dates set for dual-credit programs by the partnering post-secondary institution. Inquire directly to Career Academy Advisor Mr. MacPherson for start-dates and application deadlines.

Program Costs
Grande Prairie Catholic School Division supports students, in partnership with post-secondary institutions, in the enrolment and completion of their post-secondary courses.

Tuition: Successful applicants have their tuition paid for by our Career Academy!
Books & Materials: Some programs have sponsorship for books and materials, while others are the responsibility of the student.
Fees: Students are responsible for post-secondary learning resource fees (LRF**) and a *$300 GPCSD Caution Fee.
*Reimbursement of Caution Fee: Upon successful completion of the course/program, the $300 GPCSD Caution Fee is reimbursed.

**LRF fees subject to change based on post-secondary rates.
